The all-school picnic is the first time in the school year that the entire WNS community gets together for an afternoon of fun! The picnic has several activities for the kids as well as a BBQ with food for everyone. New and returning families as well as faculty and staff are in attendance for this start of the year celebration.
First Friday Coffees are an opportunity to connect with the community and stay updated on school events. They are held in the MPR on the 5401 West campus and occur the first Friday of every month from 8:45-9:30 am. All PS-8 parents are invited to attend.
Monday and Friday mornings, the school day begins with an opening assembly at 8:10 am. The assembly opens with the Pledge of Allegiance and the Pledge to the Earth followed by announcements and a variety of special presentations. Assembly concludes by 8:30 am. The assembly ends with a period of quiet reflection with music. All parents, PS-8, are welcome to attend.
Each Wednesday morning at drop-off time, parents and family members are invited to join the ECC students on the yard to sing our favorite songs as a community. While parents are welcome and encouraged to stay for these, it is not required.
The Board of Trustees and the Head of School, and Director of Development provide new WNS parents with an inside look at the business of the school. It is a great opportunity to be updated on all school projects and initiatives, look at the year ahead, and understand how the Board and School Administration manage the school’s budget. All new parents are strongly encouraged to attend. Childcare is offered for K-8 students.
Party books are parent-hosted events that take place throughout the school year. They include a variety of different activities such as fun grade-level parties for the kids, hiking or yoga classes, or an evening out for the parents. With all the different kinds of parties taking place, there is something for everyone!
Every year WNS invites three to four speakers to the school to participate in our Speaker Series. Ranging in topics both relevant and important, the whole community is invited to come and enjoy the insights of our wonderful speakers. Past speakers have included: Jessica Lahey, Alison Park, Erin Ramsey, and Common Sense Media.
The Winter Program is the K-8th Grade students’ gift to the school community before Winter Break. The winter program is largely student-driven and includes performances from all grade levels. Students in the Winter Program elective, with help from teachers, decide on a theme for the program and select songs for each grade level to perform. Students also design the costumes, props, choreography, and presentation of the songs. The program is presented over two days to accommodate all of our families and their guests.
We host an annual Gala that is our largest community-building event and our largest fundraising event of the year. We bring our entire PS-8th grade community together in a fun and lively evening that is not to be missed!
Open House is just that, an open house that highlights the work of our Preschool-8 students as we approach the end of the school year. The teachers and students decorate and display their projects, and we open our doors to the community. Unlike Back-to-School Night, which is only for parents, Open House is for everyone: children, parents, grandparents, newly accepted families, neighbors.Come and see what has been happening throughout the school, not just in your child’s classroom; all three buildings will be open! The only caveat: parents must stay with their children. We do not want any adults getting lost!
The Alumni Assembly is Monday of the last week of the school year when we invite back to our K-8 Morning Assembly WNS the students who graduated from our school four years earlier and are now graduating from high school. We honor them, we find out what their future plans are, and we invite them to a reception following the assembly. ECC parents are welcome to join us for this special assembly.
Celebration/Beach Day is a special time following the Alumni Assembly for our students to enjoy some special activities to celebrate the end of the school year. It happens at school for Preschool-5 and at the beach for middle school. Preschoolers will celebrate with all school games and other fun activities on our preschool campus. Yearbooks are distributed on this day. These events do not involve parents.
This is a day, every other year, when we welcome and celebrate the grandparents and special friends in our students’ lives. The day includes breakfast and refreshments, class presentations, and classroom visits. It is a minimum school day. The next one will be held in November 2018.
WNS's mission is to create a community of lifelong learners that nurtures students from diverse backgrounds to reach their full potential and inspires them to contribute to the world with confidence, creativity, curiosity, conscience and compassion.
